cd 40

Columbia, SC — June 25, 2024 — California Dreaming, an iconic fixture in Columbia’s dining scene, is thrilled to announce its 40th anniversary. Located in the heart of historic Union Station, the restaurant has been serving exceptional food and unforgettable dining experiences since 1984, with a focus on fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch recipes.

For four decades, California Dreaming has been a beloved destination in Columbia, celebrated for its welcoming atmosphere, house-made food, and friendly service, perfect for any occasion. The restaurant’s menu, offering a mix of American classics and original dishes, has consistently delighted guests, making it a favorite dining destination for locals and visitors alike. Signature items such as the namesake California Dreaming Salad paired with honey-butter croissants, thick-cut steaks, and hearty seafood dishes have become staples that keep guests coming back.

“We are incredibly grateful to our loyal guests and dedicated staff who have made these 40 years possible,” said Karen Hall of California Dreaming, Columbia. “Our journey from opening day to becoming a cherished part of the community has been remarkable. We look forward to many more years of serving the Columbia community with the same passion and commitment that has brought us here today.”

Honoring the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere, the signature frozen drink, “Cali Crush,” will be featured on the menu all summer long, offering a refreshing toast to four decades of excellence. As California Dreaming celebrates this milestone, the restaurant invites guests to share pictures and stories from the past on social media.

A Rich History at Union Station

California Dreaming is housed in the historic Union Station, a landmark that dates back to 1902. Originally built as a passenger station for the Southern Railway, the building has a storied past, having played a significant role in Columbia’s transportation history. The station’s architectural beauty, characterized by its grand façade and intricate details, provides a unique and charming backdrop for the restaurant’s contemporary dining experience.

Joey D’s: AJC “from the menu of…”

From the Menu Of… Joey D’s, New Orleans Spicy Shrimp

AJC, March 4, 2021
By C.W. Cameron

The sauce that comes with the New Orleans barbecue shrimp appetizer at Joey D’s Oak Room is absolutely divine. It includes a mixture of spices with a smoky taste to it. I would love to have the recipe for that dipping sauce! It would pair well with other fish recipes as well. — Viviana Fernandez, Sandy Springs

This spicy shrimp appetizer has been on the menu at Joey D’s Oak Room since the restaurant opened more than 30 years ago. It’s a classic New Orleans preparation that is messy to eat but worth the mess. This is the first time the restaurant has been willing to share this recipe, so we’re glad to be able to feature it.

Entrepreneurial Hospitality program named in honor of Greenbaum family

Tulane University, Freeman News

October 2020

After graduating from Tulane University, Jerry Greenbaum (BBA ’62) grew the modest liquor store founded by his father into a family of successful hospitality businesses including a chain of beverage alcohol superstores and more than a dozen upscale casual restaurants across the Southeast.

Along the way, Greenbaum and his wife, the former Barbara Axelrod (NC ’63), also became two of Tulane’s most dedicated supporters. A past chair of the Freeman Business School Council, Greenbaum joined the Board of Tulane in 2011 and provided leadership and funding for major projects including the Goldring/Woldenberg Business Complex, the Barbara Greenbaum Residence Hall, Yulman Stadium and the Freeman School’s new online graduate program in Entrepreneurial Hospitality.

On Friday, Oct. 16, Tulane paid tribute to the Greenbaums’ lifetime of support by naming the new program in their honor. The Greenbaum Family Program in Entrepreneurial Hospitality will apply the joint lenses of entrepreneurship and hospitality to focus on the business principles needed to deliver an exceptional customer experience. The centerpiece of the program is the Entrepreneurial Hospitality specialization within the Master of Management program, which will welcome its first student cohort in January 2021 as the Freeman School’s first online graduate degree program.

“The creation of this program couldn’t come at a better time, at a better place and couldn’t have a better name — the Greenbaum Family Program in Entrepreneurial Hospitality,” said Tulane President Mike Fitts during a virtual meeting of the Business School Council. “New Orleans is a center of hospitality, Tulane is a center of entrepreneurship and the Greenbaums are highly successful entrepreneurs and models of hospitality.”

“Jerry Greenbaum was the inspiration for this program,” added Freeman School Dean Ira Solomon. “He provided the original key insights on the intersection of hospitality and entrepreneurship that drove the creation of this program. Quite simply, it could not have existed without Jerry and Barbara’s advice and counsel.”

At all CentraArchy Restaurants, we’ve taken additional steps to ensure a healthy environment for our guests and team. In an abundance of caution, we have strengthened our sanitizing measures and safety practices.

  • We follow federal and state guidelines on all health and safety issues and are taking guidance from the CDC and our local health authorities if any additional measures need to be taken.
  • We understand, from the CDC, that the virus cannot be transferred through food; only from person to person.
  • We always follow the stringent Department of Public Health regulations in our restaurants every day and will continue to do so, from S.H.O.W.T.I.M.E. procedures, to food safety, to not allowing employees to come to work should they feel sick.

Thank you for putting your trust in us, we look forward to serving you soon.

Dish of the Week, New Orleans Spicy Shrimp

AJC, February 2020

Dunwoody spot’s shrimp are messy, but worth it

The menu at Joey D’s describes the New Orleans spicy shrimp as, “a mess to eat, but worth it!” It’s hard to disagree with that assessment, although it doesn’t do justice to the degree of messiness you’ll experience when you come face to face with this bowlful of crustaceans. And, you will be face to face, because these large, beautiful shrimp are served with heads and shells intact.

The Tavern At Phipps launches new menu

ATLANTA, Ga. (June 17, 2019) – Since 1992, The Tavern at Phipps has served over five million patrons with a simple approach—a lively environment with upscale food. The Buckhead hot spot is known for its unique left-revolving door, flying napkins and live music has introduced a new menu to adapt to the needs of its growing clientele.

“The Tavern at Phipps has always been a place where ladies and gentlemen can meet to enjoy a broad menu and bar selection served with generous hospitality,” said CentraArchy CEO Vince Van Brunt. “As we continue to grow with the community we’ve served for nearly three decades, there was an opportunity to fine tune The Tavern formula in a way that appeals to everyone from our business lunch guests to our cocktail hour regulars.”

New menu items include a mild shishito pepper starter dish, fresh pastas and smaller cut steak options. For lunch, the seared ahi tuna salad is so far the biggest hit followed by the Thai kale and Mediterranean sea bass. Regulars will be pleased to see old favorites like Tavern chips and Carnegie style pastrami sandwiches remain. New twists on cocktail favorites are also featured on the new drink menu as well as prosecco on tap.

The Tavern remains an Atlanta fixture, full of traditions that place it in a category of its own. Known for its happy hours and talented bartenders, The Tavern at Phipps has always been a go-to spot for any night out.

As commercial space in the area continues to grow, The Tavern has also become a popular spot for both business lunches and after work cocktails and dining. The new menu changes, paired with minor tweaks to the restaurant’s atmosphere will help accommodate the evolving needs of guests.

“Our hope is that regulars winding down with a cocktail after work will stay and dine with us,” said Van Brunt. “We’d also like to ensure our regulars remain regulars for years to come, returning with their families to start new traditions. For a location that has done so well with a winning strategy for so long, we’ve obviously thought a lot about even the smallest changes and believe Atlanta will love the new Tavern at Phipps.”

The Tavern at Phipps is located at 3500 Peachtree Road and is open daily at 11:00 a.m., 365 days a year. Parking is available throughout Phipps Plaza. For more information, call 404-814-9640 or visit www.tavernatphipps.com.

California Dreaming restaurant to reopen September 22 with Irma repairs complete

CD_logo_Open

Popular Charleston dining hot spot redirected perishable food supplies to local charities, guests invited back for free croissants all day Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (September 22, 2017) – After withstanding both a soaking from Tropical Storm Irma early last week and subsequent small fire, Charleston, S.C. casual dining favorite California Dreaming will reopen Saturday, September 23 at 11 a.m. The restaurant is offering its signature fresh croissants for free all day Saturday, as a small token of appreciation to patient guests.

“We consider ourselves very fortunate to have pulled through this storm as well as we did,” said California Dreaming operating partner Brent Register. “While our scenic lower Ashley River location is part of the attraction to our location, it also makes us vulnerable to rare weather events like Tropical Storm Irma. Our sincere thanks go out to Charleston County police and fire services for their assistance as well all so many regular guests who have sent us their light hearted encouragement through social media. Our thoughts remain with individuals and businesses who continue in their recovery efforts.”

Tropical Storm Irma flooded the space below the building but left the upstairs restaurant area mostly undamaged. A small fire believed to be related to flooding of electrical equipment further complicated the repairs which were completed this week.

Once it became apparent the restaurant would not be able to serve guests for several days, store management worked quickly to donate over $10,000 worth of perishable prepared foods and food supply to Tricounty Family Ministries, an organization dedicated to fulfilling basic needs to those most vulnerable with respect and care. Learn how you can help at tricountyfamilyministries.org.

The restaurant’s 150 employees are eager to return to work and when not involved in cleanup efforts, enjoyed reading social media posts from regular guests. In fact, the free croissant giveaway was the staff’s idea of a small thank you to those who posted “#croissantstrong,” a play on the “#charlestonstrong” hashtag last week.

California Dreaming is located at 1 Ashley Pointe Dr., Charleston and will resume its regular lunch and dinner service from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

ATLANTA (October 1, 2016) – CentraArchy Restaurants continues in its commitment to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its sixth annual “Pink Kiss for the Cure” campaign, where all 19 restaurants sell a limited edition Pink Kiss martini. The restaurants have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer research and care, and this month, the restaurants hope to add thousands more to that total. The campaign will run through the end of the month with proceeds benefiting The Pink Agenda.

The Pink Agenda’s beliefs coincide with that of the restaurants, “… spread the word about breast cancer, reflect on the research being done to cure it, and honor our loved ones who have been affected by it, while at the same time having a great time.” Throughout the month of October, 50% of the sales from Pink Kiss martini will be donated to The Pink Agenda. Additionally, the restaurant staff will be donned in pink, as well as the complimentary golf tees at New York Prime and Chophouse ‘47.

Together with their guests, CentraArchy Restaurants; New York Prime, California Dreaming, The Tavern at Phipps, Chophouse New Orleans, Carolina Roadhouse, Joey D’s Oak Room, Chophouse ’47, Gulfstream Café and Burro Loco, are committed to finding tomorrow’s cure. Fans are encouraged to share their photo-worthy images on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #PinkKiss.
